At its September meeting, the Pensacola State College Board of Trustees (BOT), acting on the recommendation of President Ed Meadows, voted to end WSRE’s fifty-three–year affiliation with PBS. The Board also formally decertified PSC’s relationship with the station.
Dr. Meadows explained that, following Congress’s vote to eliminate funding for PBS, the costs of operating WSRE had become unsustainable for the College. PSC will now explore a potential affiliation with ECHO Television. Unfortunately, this transition is expected to eliminate at least seven currently filled positions.
During the same meeting, Trustee Zack Smith — an attorney with the Heritage Foundation and also a Trustee for the University of West Florida — raised concerns about what he described as a “lack of oversight” by Dr. Meadows. His comments focused on the hiring of a new Executive Director of Workforce and Continuing Education, who had previously spoken in favor of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) while working at Achieve Escambia. Smith had raised similar objections against then–UWF President Martha Saunders shortly before she resigned from that post.
Here’s a link to WEAR’s coverage of the meeting.
At the August BOT meeting, Trustee Smith expressed his displeasure with a textbook being used in an introductory sociology course, prompting the course to be removed from the list of General Education core courses at PSC. Once again, the prevailing concern: DEI. Earlier this year, Mr. Smith led the charge against a faculty sabbatical examining student poverty, arguing that it, too, was DEI-focused.
Your presence matters. The next Board of Trustees meeting is on Tuesday, October 21, at 5:30 p.m. on the Warrington Campus. Decisions made at these meetings shape the future of PSC, and strong faculty attendance helps ensure our voices are heard
